A SERIOUS CHARGE.
An Ex"Salvationist m Trouble.
i (by tblegkaph.) (united press association.) Auckland, January 16. At the Salvationist, meeting last evening, Detective Walk or arrested a Salvationist named Harry GooJwood on a charge of rape, on a gworn information of a girl named Ellen Paiue, who alleges that the offence was committed m the Domain last Friday night under the .following circumstances : — They had met that evening at the meeting at the Temparence Hall. Complainant, who is a siDgle woman and a recent arrival m the colony, is m service at a place m the Kyber Pass Road. Accused, after the meeting, volunteered to escort her home, and suggested as the nenveat road, that they should go through the Domain. Miss Paine, who v^as,not acquainted with the lonely character of the route, consented to go that way. The offonce is alleged to have. been committed m the Domain on j the road home. The accused, who is I well known m Auckland, is a sailor, and is about 30 years of age. He is as the driver of a donkeyengine -on the Queen-street wharf. Qaptain Graham, of the Salvation Army says, . he had constantly attended the Army meetings, and was formerly a member, but for some months has noi',been recognised, owing to his general misbehaviour. He had been turned out of a Good Templar's Lodge for misopßiluct. The girl is unknown to the Salvation leader, as she only casually attended.
