It is notified elsewhere that there will be mass to-morrow at 11 o'clock. The Rev. Father MoManue, the new Catholic clergyman for this district arrived by train last evening. The following curious paragraph appears m the Wairarapa Star of Tuesday : — '* A. sleepiog-beauty caae of an alarming character is reported from Carterton. Our correspondent writes that the wife of a well-known tailor having abandoned him during a spree, returned to her Lome, but under the influence of mixed emo- . tions— -love, rage, and jealousy— became hysterical and seriously ill. Yesterday (Sunday; her husband consulted Dr. Bey, and received a sleeping draught to be administered m doges. Through a curious mistake two doses were, administered togethbr, and the" result is that the patient has fallen into a sound slumber^ from which up to this" morning, she has failed to awaken." Musket's eon, Krupp, has already come into notice for some of his three«year»old engagements, being backed for the Canterbury Derby to win about £1500, at 100's to 10. i The Wellington Sharebrokers' Assocla* von announce the: receipt of directors' report and balance-sheet of ths Keep*it» Dark Quartz- mining Company, lieefton, from which it appears that during the past year 9378 tons of quartz have been raised from the mine and crushed, for a return of 55800 x Bdwt 18gr melted gold (the average yield being nearly I2dwt par ton); total value, £21,826 8i 3d. A dividend (the 49th; of Is p^r 20,000 th share was declared on the 3 1st ultimo, making the disbursements on account of dividends during the past year £12,500. The directors anticipate paying steady dividends to- thare u holders tor the next three or four years. The Salvation Army are going m for fresh novelties. The New Zealand War Cry of the 29 h ult. says :-— " On Saturday last Major Pollard, Captain Spratt, and Captdin Bedingfield, clad m scarlet quern* aeys, went into the principal streets of Dunedin selling War Orya, and sold six dozen m 15 minutes. Wanted, every officer and soldier to do the same m the same way next Saturday. A large stock of scarlet guernseys have arrived and can be had from headquarters for 108 each. You should get one." Says the Brockton Enterprise :— A society reporter, describing the social feß--tivities following a marriage m high life, wrote that " after enioying the generous feast, with its profusion of musty old wines, the merry party all filed down stairs and joined the wedding dance." His handwriting was rather bad, and when he looked at the paper that evening his hair first gently but firmly rose and atood on end, and then the unfortunate vouog man stole into the wood 3 and shot himself with a pocket.pistol. ; This is the way the compositor set up his report ;—'* After enjoying the generous feast, with its pro* fusion of musty old wives, the merry party, all fell down stairs and spoiled their ready-made pants." A telegram from Patea states that it has. transpired that Major Atkinson bullied Mr Carkeek for saying the natives obstructed the survey of the Mokau route. The general opinion here is that Carkeek should be discharged. He says he is not auxious to again venture m the Alokau country, and does not oar©" how soon his successor is appointed. A Paris telegram states that the Prince de Joinville is laid up at Chantilly. He had occasion to,punish a little dog, which a mastiff had taken under its .protection. The latter jumped t.t the Prince's face and tore it severely. The wound* are so bad as to need to be sewn up. The Queen has commissioned Mr Woodville to paint fdr her a large picture of the storming of Tel-el-Kebir, from where the Duke of Connaught was stationed. As the noble Duke was m the background very much on that ocbasion a fiood view of the battle will be obtained, For Riga Cathedral, Russia, 'an brgan Is being erected, -the largest m the world,' containing 7000 st6pg. : ;
