A young married man named Frede* rick Pahl was riding in thfl Motupiko Valley when a dead tree was blown down and fell upon him and his horse, killing both. Pahl leaves a wife and child. He was accompanied by a friend, who had a narrow escape. Christchurch, Jannary 2. A man named Jacobs was drowned last night while returning from EHesmere regatta in a boat. Jacobs, was in the employ of Macdonald, and was in the flat* bottomed boat with a son of his employer. The water was rough, with choppy waves, and the boat overturned.. Both clung to it for a long time, but Jacobs at last fell off. It was dark at the time. The boat dcif ted with Macdonald, who was exhausted with cold and wef. As he was tired, he went to sleep, and did not wake till daylight. Deeeased's body had not been found at 4 p m.
