THE UNEMPLOYED.
In addressing the " unemployed " at Christchurch, Mr KoHeston was carefal to state distinctly that the Ministry had not the slighest intention to abandon or suspend immigration ; but that, on the contraryj they considered it absolutely necessary, and a part of the settled policy of the colony, to continue it wnilst public works were going J on. The offer of employment' temporarily on local worki at 4s 6d a day v*as made to those who stated that they were destitute, but almost all refused to accept it. Tt was significant that out of the 307 men who figued the petition, 78 had been 20 years or over m the colony, 33 had been 15 years or over, 62 had been 10 years or over, and 90 had been five years or over, only 45 being, m any sense of the term, " new churns."- Were the latter those who gratefully accepted tho temporary employment offered them?
