Blackburn and Thomas, the Victorian wrestlers, will not, after all, come to Dunedin for the Caledonian gathering, but Donald Dinnie will be the great ! attraction, Several Scotch shepherds m the country aro said to have thrown up their billets rather than miss seeing the great champiou event. Christchurch, December 24. A heavy thunderstorm broke over the city last evening, and continued for some time. Flashes of forked lightning —a sight not often seen m- this district — were frequent, and peals of thunder were heavy enough to shake buildings not of a veiy substantial nature. At Lyttelton Gaol it was customary to give the prisoners a Christmas dinuer. This custom was discontinued two years a S° °y the Government, but last year a number of private individuals contributed tq give a dinuer. This year the same thing was being arranged for, when peremptory orders, which it is believed were leceiyed from the inspeotor of Prisons at Wellington, arrived as follows : — " No Christmas dinner to be allowed at the gaol,"
