The Christcharch Press of a reoent date says :— "The Union Company's express packet, the steamship Takapuna excelled ahv previous run ironq Manukau to Lyttelton, including stoppages *t Niwi Plymouth and Wellington. Bhe left Msnukau at 7.30 en Saturday evening, and was m tti's harbour yesterday at 7;30 a.m. thirty-six hours exactly. She stopped at JNpxv Plymouth for an hou', and WeMiagiOn three-quarters o\ an hour. Pasßengu'i who were m Auckland last Saturday evening thus found themselves m Canterbury m time for breakfast yesterday mo. ning. The distance travelled is m nautical miles shown as 432 miles, so that the journey was performed at the speed of about 13£ milps (n>utica') per hour right through, i'nc uding stoppage — not much short of express train rates, as passenger trains aie rnn m this country."
