SEVEBAT^of our readers have expressed desire to have published for general information a synopsis of the provisions of " The Roads and Bridges Construction Act, 1882, Amendment Act" passed last session, which contains some alterations of interest. Section 10 of the original Act is amended by the omission of all words after "cost of construction," and section 34 is repealed, and m lieu thereof it is enacted " That bII aplications f r construction of main roads, under^ the said Act, made m any year after this year, shall be made prior to the 30th of June m each, year, and those made for construction o v district roads or river works shall be made prior to the 30th of June and 31st of December respectively; but all applications so made shall be. deemed to have been made simultaneously on the respective days above mentioned." Any roads gazetted : before the 81st of March this year are to be main roads for the purpose of any application made before the 80th of June last passed. No application by local bodies made aft<er this year is to exceed £5000, under pain' of being rejected, and all made m the present ytar are to be reduced to such sums by the respective local bodies making the same. In granting applications, those for bridges are to have priority over roads, and are to be considered next m order after Cases of extraordinary damage, Imrr prest payments may be made, when the grant to be expended has been dully approved by the Minister, if thecondi- ( tions are relative to the local boc'y giving debentures as required by the 14th section of the Act, or supplied one-fourth the cost of the work. • Strict accounts of expenditure are to be supplied aud audited, and any moneys misapplied are to be recovered as ■ a debt due to the Crown. Each and all of the members of the local body who ponspnted to or permitted such a misappro |.riat|on are to be held personally 'and individually responsible, so tfrere \a little chance of this ocQurfyg.
