Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) MONDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1883. THE LOWER FERRY.
... »■- People are expressing their surprise, that no further progress is being made with the work of erecting the* bridge oter the Manawatu at the Lower Ferry, Ihe timber, (or a large portion of it) has been on the ground for months past, but that is -all the stage tne work has 'advanced. Every how and again, as. on Saturday, communication is suspended through a heavy flood m the river, and some day ,a fatal . accident will occur through a boat capsizing or, being swept away by the resistless current. The ferrymen who are most willing to oblige thej public, ;- cross the river : whenever \ practicable, thoiiga occasionally incurring considerable personal risk m doing i so. Traffic also suffers, and considered jj from: every point of view, any further! delay m the commencement of this very necessary work will be detrimental , to the interests of the settlers and the districts on both sides of the river. Before many months the railway from Napier will be open to Tahoraite, when: a large proportion of the traffic at present through the Gorge will be diverted via Napier. This is the aspect that chiefly coucerns Palmerston residents, who should 1 unite with those of Ashurst and Woodville m a combined agitation to get the Bridge started without further delay. :• .
