Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) Suivant la verite. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1883. OUR BOROUGH LOAN.
So far as. is known to the Press or public nothing has yet been done with' regard to the Borough Loan proposals. We have heard that the question has been discussed m. committee but with what result we have not been informed. We trust the matter will not be postponed too long. A recent, item of cable news read as follows: — "Money is cheapening, and colonial securities are rising m value. The prospects are considered good for the Adelaide loan." Since then we have learnt that the Adelaide loan was all subscribed for. This shows that the opportunity is favourable for going to the London market. So far as we can see the difficulties m the way are very trifling, and indeed are not worthy of consideration, for they are only such as ca**. be easily overcome? The question is one of the utmost importance, but of course demands due consideration at the hands of the Council, Possibly tbe better course would be to refer it to a special poinmittee, by wbom a report aould be brought up to the Council to be by them fully considered »s to detail. We doubt
if all things considered any more favour* able opportunity will present itself of applying to the London market. The sooner the question is discussed m open Council, and some definite step taken m the way of preliminary deliberation, the earlier can the question be advanced further necesary stages, and be brought to a successful issue. It is a matter the discussing of which should not be postponed indefinitely, if the interests of the Borough are not to suffer.
