With reference to the Eev. Mr. Shaw, whose name has been mentioned m/ out; telegrams lajieljr; correspondent of the Planters' Gazette, a Mauritius paper, states that -Mr Shaw is a man whoJtias always distinguished himself by his charity and toleration. Independently, of his religious office, he practisedmedicihe, and acquired a great influence over the HoYas.which h" exer: cised for the general good. l)uring the bombardment of Tamatave he was instrumental m preserving the place from a general conflagration, and two or three days afterward. his r house was sacked and destroyed. The contents of his surgery were scattered abroad. Some laudanum was greedily swallowed by people ignorant of its character,' and one of the charges brought. agnnst "Mr Shaw was that of having poisoned the pillagers. At the same time an English merchant named Aitken and two of his clerks were arrested, .^as. welfak several persons who had taken \ refuge under his roof.
