THE WAY THE MONEY GOES.
(Patea Mail.) ; : One of the last Acts of the Housq was to pass a rote to pay the travelling expenses of the members 1 wives. "Why the country should be bwdoned' with this additional charge if more than we
can understand,. Members receive | two hundred gu ipearff'fpt' their services to the colony, aiidj thai; is not bad pay for three months' ! work. We do not say that th& . s^utn should be less, because the representatives are put to various expenses Which no doubt' almost, if not quite, equal the sum received as ! honorarium. But surely' ojut, of their " screw" they could provide for J the passage of their wives, if theytnust have them while m Wellington. Seeing jhe depression that exists .all th^ Colony, it appears rather mean on the , part of menrbers to draw . money Jrpin the Colonial Kxchequer for purposes of their own enjoyment. And that is what they have done, unless we are to understand that members are guided m their legislative duties by their consorts. In that caße some of them had better resign m favour of their better halves and allow them to fill the position. They: would not do it so discreditably as some of the " repa * 7 themselves. "
