Tl»e which is an immense wooden pile stands on the reclaimed land. There were no horses available to take the engine.to the scene and consequently the firemen had to drag it to the fire. # As soon as possible the hose was laid on from a pump m Stanlpy Street and taken across the street to.^the burning factory, but there , was insufficient hose owing to the diataricej In consequence the lire crossed the street and ignited ihe Btackedlitimber which' was speedily m a sheet of flame. The firemen did al m their power with the resources at hand, and succeeded m keeping the fire within the limits of the factory and timber yard-, allowing- it to burn itself out. The offices of the Company were saved owing to' the direction of the wind, but the iwhole stabling accom- ■ modation and residences of carters who lived there were burned. The origin of the fire is unknown, an f d the watchman is of opinion that the fire was not accidental, .luir '■■ -
