'Frisco Mail.

(Per Zealandia at Auckland.) (united press association.) Auckland, This Day. The mail steamer, Zealandia, with the English mail via San Francisco, arrived at 10 o'clock this eveninsr, bsing three days before time-table date. London, July 30. A desperate attempt; was made on the 28th, m a railway carriage between Calais and Paris, to murifbr and rob the Rev, Mr Whitehorn, an English clergyman. The murdered attacked Mr Whitehom with a chisel, stabbing him five times. assailant, an Englishr man, was captured. The Pope is deeply disturbed by the state of affairs m Ireland and France. ; A large portion of Aix-la-Chapelle was destroyed by fire on June 29. At the Sunderjand catastrophe heartrending scenes occurred, mothers of dead children constantly uttering plercing shrieks, and many fainted on dis« covering the bodies of their little ones. One hundred tiea graves were provided m one cemetery for the reception of the victims. The Empress of Germany wrote to. the Queen expressing diep sympathy with the sufferers by this terrible disaster. Irishmen met m Paris on June 23rd, and denounced the recent Dublin execution as a massacre. A mass meeting was held m Chicago to rebuke the Pope for interfering m Irish politics. The reported set-to between Mace and Lord Charles Beresford is pro* nounced a hoax .
