Manawatu Standard. Suivant La verite. WEDNESDAY, J ULY 11, 1883 NEW ZEALAND TIMBER.

From the Home letter of a contemporary we extract the following : — The United States Consul at Auckland has sent his Government an exhaustive and interesting report on this subject, which has been printed aud commented on by the -iootecy oi Arts Journal. From what he says, it is obvioafnhat much of tbe timber grown m the South Island, a& any rate, would find a good market m I 1 uiope ; but its capabilities and uses require to be more fuly udvertis-d, and some of the methods of felling and cut'ing practised m the colonies involve a deal of waste. A systematic method of Conservation should be adopted by the Government, or before long tbe misfortune attending a wholesale depletion of the native foreßts will be severely felt. The effect of forest growth on climate is too well known to need comment, ani the rapidly-diminishing sources from which the chief supplies are now drawn will make New Zealand forests more and more valuab'e as years to on. I ob« seive the Consul mentions, amongst other trees, the totara as one specially suitable for telegraph poles and lor use m marine works, as it resists the depredations of the toredo. This last property is peculiarly important, as it is very difficult to get a timber of this class. Elaborate preparations have to be made here by creosoting under pressure and other means to defend piles from the deadly attack of this worm. Owners of totara forest would do well to biing the peculiar advantages of this timber more prominently before tbe European public.
