LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Sometimes our local railways authorities are very strict m enforcing-the rules and regulations, and sometimes they don't see glaring evasions of the same. A few evenings ago a person was engaged speaking to a friend m a carriage, when the engine whistled to start, but he never got off till the train had considerable way on. Our indefatigable station- master and übiquitous porter were standing olose by, strange to say, but apparently never observed what was within view and remarked by nearly everyone on the platform. Cr Ferguson at the last meeting of the Borough Council stated, m reference to the proposed formation of a body of firo police, •that m conversation with a bank manager, whom, he did not name, that gentleman stated his willingness to enrol a body of fire police and place himself at its head. Did it not strike Cr Ferguson that a body of fire ' police might prefer to exercise the privilege of selecting their own captain, and would be quite capable ol using that privilege with discretion? The Attorney.General of New South Wales refuses to surrender the lunatic Oreswell, now confined m the Paramatta Lunatic | Asylum, to the applicants from England, who insist that he is the veritable Arthur Orfcon, and want to take him home.
It is stated that 11,342 miles of railway weie laid down m the United States m 1872 — 2000 miles more than m 3881. Steveus, for offering a bribe to a native .land officer, his Honor said the indictment was bad, but he wonld give a written judgment. The Auckland City Council has finally resolved on a loan of £20,000 tor water supply extension, drainage, and street formation, the money to be allocated m a Bill to ihe various wards. The decision, is subject to a poll. In the Philosophical Society m Wellington Dr Newman stated that monstrosities were nothing but the reappearance of a portion of the form of an ancestor.
