ADVERSE CRITICISM.
The Timaru Herald expresses the following views on the Financial Statement:—"The people of the colony, like a patient ass, stand quietly before him and let him pile one burden after another on their back, without even lifting up a hoof to warn him they do not like the process. The property tax, by the bye, was a grand invention for financiers like M*jor A tkinson. Finan* ciu£ nowadajS is as easy as shelling yeas. All you have to do is to make your estimates of expenditure aa big as you please, and if you do not think the revenue will cover them, calculate the probable deficiency, double it, stick tha :im<'uut on the property tax, and there you have a su plus ready to your hand. Auy fool could fiaunc^ like that. Thw skill lies iv getting a majority to let you do it." The Herald thiuss " much Magazine iea.ting hath made him prosy," and altogether thinks the Statement one of the poorest productions of ihe kind.
