Annexation of New GUINEA.

Mr Gladstone, m replying to a question by Sir Michael Hicks-Beach, said the action of the Queensland Government m taking possession of Ne/r Guinea was, m point of law, quite unwarrantable, while as a point of policy, the Cabinet could not confirm tbe ac« don of the colonial Government. If such a nieasure as annexation was necessary Imperial ; action would have to be taken to make it legal. The Radicals loudly cheered Mr Gladstone^ reply to Sir Michael Hicks» | Beach. It is understood that. Lord ' Derby, m his despatch, refuses to sanc- [ tion the annexation of New Guinea on the ground of the enormous expense which would be involved m the administration of such an extension of territory. He expresses an opinion that they had better federate, as singly they must be unable to accomplish it. Lord Carnar« von opposed the annexation of tbe New Hebridfis, and said that the duty of preveniing it lvstwl with the Eouse.
