He appealed m vain for recruits m the temperance cause; not a wan would move; At this stage of the proceedings the belle of the town sprang to her feet, and cried mthe sweetest of voices : ; - Boys thisi* really too bad, , Won't you sign the pledge ? Not ti soul moved : from his seat. Again the fair belle appealed to the men's better nature, but it was to no avail: they bad promised theyiwouldn't sign.. Finally tbe lady .said :, "■Now. hoys, I will kiss tbe first : man who signs the pledge." At this" juncture up iamped * tall backwoodsman, who exclaimed: •'SiF, I'm yer huckleberry.
