Buprerae Court has been occupied all day m investigating a dispute relative to a piece of land variously estimated as worth from 14s to £8. Counsel are engaged on each side, an? there are four surveyors aad three other witnesses. The sitting will have to be adjourned to allow the chief Justice to go to Gisborne on Tuesday. During the sittings, his Honor has taken occasion to express 6trong disapproval of the sittings of the Court being held at Gisborne and other small places, on the ground that impartial juries cannot be obtained. In a case heard at the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day for obtaining goods under fa-se pretences, it was shown that a cheque cashed for a servant girl bad no date, the pretended signature was misspelt, the whole writting was illiterate, though pro* fessedly by a well-known tradesman, and the body of the cheque was for £6 Hnd the amount at the foot was stated at £6000. The Resident Magistrate i flicted a light sentence, remarking the tradesman who took the cheque was as culpable as thft girl. A meeting of southern settlers is called to consider the rabbit question. The firry pest is not yet m the province l>ut has spread to thfl rabbit fence on the southern boundary, aad it is feartd it will m«ke its way round the fence if further pr ventatives measures be not at once taken.
