Manawatu Standar (PUBLISHED DAILY.) Suivant La Verite. SATURDAY, JUNE 16,1883. DISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH.
There has been some talk about the remarks made by .Mr De Lautour, M.H.fl.i m his speech to his constituents, on the. Costly bequest. In a private' letter to a friend m Auckland Mr De Lautoue makes the following explanation .:—" I expect I shall get hauled over the coa^ about the reference to the Costlky bequest. This is one of the worst parts of the report, and not put at all as .1 put it. My argument waa-that m equality m the distribution of wealth caused by one man holding land, and others dying around him m the struggle for life, and giving, his land virtually by their life's t)!ooH, would cause dangers and revolutions m the State if there was not a religious spirit m the people. It was these inequalities that gave the nationalisation's of land th«ir texts, and, as I believe, led to theories being preached as practical dogmas when by no means suitable for our circumstances."
