The increase of the Jewish population m this quarter has been caused by the immigra* tion from Russia. The single women immigrants by the lonic have the appearance of being of a very desirable stamp, and are about equal to those which arrived by the British Queen. The same remarks, however, frcarcely apply to the families, which do not appear to be either so clean or of such good physique as the previous arrivals. Taking them as a whole, they are cei> tainly not an undesirable accession to the population of the colony. An, incident is recorded m the .Paris ' Temps * which reminds one of a ; scerie m the " Bohemian Girl." A writer m the Scientific American puts forward a theory that the ancient Egyptian obelisks are not cut from stone, but were formed of concrete. If this view is proved correct, and if some genius finds out that the blocks m the pyramids were formed partly of the sand of the desert; all the ideas as to the superior mechanical appliances of the olden time will be dis» polled.'
