Important Interview.

NORTH ISLAND TKONK KAILWAY.

DEPUTATION TO GOVERNMENT.

IHE CENTRAL ROUTE TO BE SURVEYED*

(BY TELEGBAPH) [UNITED PRESS >SSOCIATICN.| ■Wellington, June 11. A deputation, consisting ot the Hon. P. A, Buckley, and Messrs 3. B. Haicourt (chairman of the Chamber pf Commerce), G. Fisher, C. A. Baker, 8. Christie, T. E. Macdonald, J. B. George, and J. Wallace, waited on the Minister lor Public Works this nrorning with reference to the .North Island Trunk Railway. Mr Johnston said : Last session 1 undertook to the Honse that the Government would not come to a decision as to the route to be adopted until all three routes were surveyed, so that fcbe House might be placed m possession of some knowledge of the coat of construction of the proposed line ; suitability for settlement of the country through which it -would pass ; and also the probable traffic along the line, and its practical advantatage?. It is not possible this session for the Government to come to a decision so as to be able to submit a resolution to the House, but, at any rate, surveys are being made. I thought m all probability Mr Carkeek would have been able to finish the work he is engaged on at present before now, and would have gone on to Taranaki, hue finding he has not, I have engaged Mr Fochtord to do the central line, and I think he will be there to-morrow. Mr Harcourt : That will be BatisfactoTy, I am su«e, to all who take an interest m this matter. Mr Johnston : The Government, of conrse, said last session that they would not table a resolution on the subject until all the three lines had been surveyed. Mr Fisher ; That is the only one point, Mr Johnston, on which the d - putation wanted information, and I think your explanation is a very satisfactory one. _____^_^^— .
