'The following is a copy of a letter I read at the Borough Council meeting; I last night, by Cr Linton, by whom it had b'ten received 'from Mr Walter Johnston, M.ff.K., as a reply to the various "resolutions passed at a recent public meeting, and submitted to the member for the district by a deputation : — ■" With reference ; to the resolutions passed at a public meeting held at Palmerston North, which you were good enough to present to me,* l have the honor to reply : To No. 1. That whils^ I-regret with the meeting my inability to visit the District, to enable my constituents to lay their wants 'before me, at the same time I trust and" believe that they will not be backward m calling my attention to those requirements of the District which it may be within the function of the General GovernmeLt to Bupply, and I will endeavour to give effect to their representations. To No. 3. TLe Government will commence the construction of the railway through the Gorge to connect the East and West ( Coast « lines, whenever the extensi on of the line on the East Coast will warrant the construction of the connecting link . To Nos. 2 and 6. The Government does not intend to give grants m aid to counties m addition to the Parliamentary: provisions made under the Roads and bridges Construction Act, To No. .4. A survey will be made of the line • along the Oroua Valley as far as the Hautapua (?) Valley, to which locality the proposed line from: Martbn will also run.; 10/ No. 5. I will submit this resolution to the Minister for Lands, land press it upon his favourable con r; j sideration. lo No. 6.
