LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Elsewhere we publish gratuitously, for the benefit of those interested, an announcement notifying that the directors of the WellingtonaManawatu Railway Company Limited, have made a call, the fourth, of one shilling per share on the capital account of the Company, and to be payable on or before "Wednesday next, the sixth day of June, at a y branch of the Bank of New Zealand. The advertisement is only published m the Wellington papers, for some inexplicable reason or otber. At a meetinsr of settlers held m Wanganui on Wednesday, to consider the frozen meat question, Mr Pharazyn moved tha following resolution, That this meeting begs to express its thanks to Messrs, Bu» chanan and Beetham for the information they have afforded, and for the advice they have given, and it is of opinion that the settlers of this coast should do all they can to aasist the Wellington Meat Export Company both by taking shares and by exporting stock and produce, so soon as satisfactory arrangements can be made for transportation either by rail or steamer. ! Samples of flax dressed m Patea have reached Wellington, and the six bales have been pronounced to be remarkably clean and marketable, as a first effort towards establishing a new industry m that district. Regarding the absence of Mr Carkeek, the surveyor, for some . weeka ;witHoht: anything being heard of him, a personal friend of that gentleman, and one also well acquainted with railway surveying, i; assures a Wellington paper, that there is ; not the cau«e for alarm. Mr Carkeek, he tells us, is an excellent hnsh- ; man and knows the country well, and is accompanied by five competent men. The part which he has been exploring . between Stratford aud Mokau is dense ■ fores h land, and he has to mark out a line of railway through it, and would probably peed five months from the time of start* ing (two months and a half back) before he would finish the job. When he is found, our informant tell no, he will most likel} turn up, not m the settled districts, btit m the interior, somewhere near " the head waters of the Wanganui River. It is reported (says the Patea Mnil) that the •« Wild Man," whose depredations Borne time ago excited the ire nf settlers on the Whenunkura block, has again made his appearance, and recommenced operations upon other people's property. It is said that Mr Kraaek hns been honoured by the " Wild Man's " attentions — a valuable fowling-piece and a qnantity of ammunition haying been oarried off. _ The whare of Mr Woods was also visited, the stranger contenting i himself with some tobacco and matches and the exchange of : a shocking bad hat for a good one, belonging to Mr Woods. 'If tßia sof t % of thing goes oh, settlers will have to organise another hunt for this mysterious depredator, and it is to be hoped their efforts will be more successful ; than they were last time. -' There are always comic episodes m the most serious occurrences (says the Argus' Londoa corresoondent), and nothing could be much funnier than the emotion caused by the Westminster explosion Jn the' | assembly of savants litting - but two : streets away, and discussing* dyua» mite forees'at the very moment of its occurrence; The general opinion, as well as it could be expressed by bodies m active motion (towards the door), was that "The electricity had broken loose." The view of inhabitants m the neighborhood of Parlia--1 ment-street(where every window is broken) is that some society of plumbers and ) glaziers has been at the bottom of the catastrophe. • . :; \ At the laejfc meeting of the Wellington Waste Lands Jfoard' the Chairman reported that no land had been sola ' since the previous meeting.: [After some consideration the proposed expenditure of £93 6s 3d by the Manawatu Highway Board m the "Kairanga Block was agreed to. Several persons were reported to be m arrears m payments on sectious taken jip nnder deferred payment^ and. they were variously dealjkwjth/
