RAILWAY RETURNS.
THElaBb Gazette to hand contains the railway returns for the year ending 31st Ma- oh, 1888, «bo main features of Which are as follows : — There are 135£ miles of railway open for traffic. The receipts are (omitting shillings and pence) £953,347 ; expenditure, £592,821 ,j the percentage of receipts being 62.18. The corresponding figures for last year were —Receipts, £892,C26 ; expenditure; £523,099 ; per centage of receipts, 58.64 ; thus showing that our railways are incrtasing 1 m their prortnictiveneßS. There were 1,564,793 tons of goods and 3,283,378 passengers carried over the lines this year, as against 1,437,713 tons and 2,911,477 passflntjers last-year.j Che 1358 miles of railway open' for traffic, together with the amount yet to be expended, will cost £11,409,479, upon wnich a net revenue of £360,525 has been earned, which is equal to a, dividend of £3 3s 2d per cent The total receipts for the. .four weeks; ending 31st March are £88,657, and the expenditure is £41,252. For tha corresponding period, last, year tin receipts were £77,267, and the ex-: penditure £48,855. . ;
