RAILWAY RETURNS.

THElaBb Gazette to hand contains the railway returns for the year ending 31st Ma- oh, 1888, «bo main features of Which are as follows : — There are 135£ miles of railway open for traffic. The receipts are (omitting shillings and pence) £953,347 ; expenditure, £592,821 ,j the percentage of receipts being 62.18. There were 1,564,793 tons of goods and 3,283,378 passengers carried over the lines this year, as against 1,437,713 tons and 2,911,477 passflntjers last-year.j Che 1358 miles of railway open' for traffic, together with the amount yet to be expended, will cost £11,409,479, upon wnich a net revenue of £360,525 has been earned, which is equal to a, dividend of £3 3s 2d per cent The total receipts for the. .four weeks; ending 31st March are £88,657, and the expenditure is £41,252. For tha corresponding period, last, year tin receipts were £77,267, and the ex-: penditure £48,855. . ;
