Major Withersj arrived at the Bay; of Islands id 1847 with the 65th Regiment, being then color-sergeant and; pay-sergeant. Soon after wards he was ordered to Auckland and promoted to the rank of : ' sergeant-major, aad then received acoramis^ioh as quarter-master. ! Subsequently he was promoted to the | rank of captain, and served as quarter- i master daring the Waikato camDai»n m the Transport Corps - Service. He eventnally retired on the rank of captain receiving a captain's pension, and then went to reside m Napier. When, the" West Coast disturbance broko out, Major Withers formed a "Volunteer Company m Napier to take part m. the work of quelling the rebellion, and he was a prominent figure throughout that campaign. The Government rewarded his service by appointing him Officer Commanding the Hawke's Bay District, and subsequently when Major Gordon retired he was appointed Inspecting Officer for the Colony. In 1876 he was appointed m charge of tho Auckland District. He leaves a grownup family^ ■ :
