Perils of the Sea.

i (bt telegraph.) (united press association) AucKiiAKD, May ,19. ' The Rangitikei seems to have had a most eventful passage. The chief officer nearly lost his life m rescuing the Chinaman off the raft from the' wreck of the steamer Kenmure Castle, owing to the heavy seas and fierce squall". At the time when the boat got alongside the raft, a heavy sea caused the raft to come dosvn with a crash on the top of the boat, nearly killing the mate. The Chinese speak most gratefully m their broken English of the kindness and humanity of Captain Miilman m saving them, as they believe that had they not been rescued that afternoon, they would have died that night from oold and exposure. The men were apparently highly pleased on learning that the occupants of the boat which left the Kenmure Castle at the same time as. they did had bpenjpescued byl&he\French steamer MontaJiare. The Rangitikei on March 2nd was also signalled by the American ship James Nasmath, of Bath, Maine, from :(3-reat Grimsby for San Francisco,; 43 days out. She stated, says Captain Millman, a severe accident had happened, and re» quested me to send a surgeon to save life. > ,They:ssnt a boat, and Dr. JErson, accompanied by the second officer, was a»ay from the ship two hours and a half. On' his return we learnt that five weeks previously a maa had fallen overboard from the main topgallant yard, and at the same time another had broken his arm by a fall on. deck. It was this one for whom assistance was j required. The arm was found ... to be broken m two places, and m a highly dangerous condition. It was amputated, and ' the patient was left much relieved . Ihe captain of the American ship asked for an extra man, if one could be spared from the Rangitikei, and as one of the. crew of the schooner Mary Agatha volunteered to go with the James Nasmabh, he' was sent on .bjoiard.,.^, „„. ■....■.,-.-,,-^.-^-,-.:-. ! .-..-^..^- . .....
