RAILWAY PIECE-WORK.
(To the Editor of the Wanganui Herald.) Sir. — Can you inform me if the same system of piece-work, as enforced on the men at the Eaarown railway workshops, J is m full force m all other New Zealand railway workshops ? If it is, Ido not wonder at the accident reported m the Herald of the 10th, as having happened at Ashurburton. Nor do I wonder at the rider added by the jury. The sama thing, or worse, may happen nearer home if the system is continued. The system at Eastown is for the foreman to giro the men a ticket tor so much work, at such a price it is impossible he or they can make wages at it and turn out good work. And if, when payday comes, he grumbles at not getting full pay for full time, hs is, not over civilly, told that if he don't like it he can go elsewhere ; and it is always a man with a family to support that is pitched upon. Trusting you will find room for this. — lam, &c, j A Sufferer.
