Straw Timber.
A process has been discovered m America by which boards caa ba manufactured from straw, and m Chicago a building six stories high and occupying an entire block is being erected for the new industry. The board is minuI factored by converting straw pulp into | thin paperlike sheets, which are passed ' through a bath containing certain chemicals m solution. They are then subjected to enormons pressure and fiually to a thorough drying process. By superimposing a number, of sheets acd incorporating them into one by the pressing process, boards of any doiired thickness up to the capacity of the machinery employed may bs produced^ The finished article, Boine specimens of which have found their way into*, trade circles ia London, appear compact as ironwood, while it is nearly fire and waterproof, and it is susceptible of being sawed, planed, or work edas wood. Three . tons of straw, the average yield qt an acre otland, will make 1606 superficial feet of board one inch m thickness.
