PRESENTATION OF PRIZES.
THE NATIVE MINISTER ON THE COLONIAL "VOLUNTEERS.
(By Telegraph.) : j (united press association) Wellington, This Day; Mr Bryce, as Defence Mims'er, presided at the presentation of prizes won at the meriting of the Wellington Rifle Association. In thanking Miss Pearce, who presented the prizes, Mr Bryce said that whatever created sympathy for the volunteers, deserved to be encour* aged, as to them the Colony will have to look for its defence m any case of emergency. If properly drilled they could prevent any foe from landing. As instancing the valae of the volunteers ie case of an emergency, he referred to his recent experience m Waikato, where m six hours alter he was able, m night time, to communicate with the couomandkg officers, the men of a corps scattered over 50 miles of country wereall ready for service. He eulogieetl thoir energy and paomptitude, which had prevented a serious calamity to the country, as but for it the Natives would have attacked tbe town and taken the Europeans prisoners. He also praised Captain Ham lin for having his corps all * ready within five hours. He had great pleasure m presiding on each an occasion ' as the present.
