At 10 o'clock to-day the' trial of Phoebe Veitcb for child r murderi was commenced. The prisoner is being dea fended by Mr Hutchison. There will then remain to be triad ; John: Burke for perjury at Bulls ; Elizabeth Jf»cks for larceny at the Rei Lion Hotel; and William Glen tworth for house-breaking at Waverky. ; We (Chronicle) nnderstand that it is hofc probable that Philip Jenkins, ; about whose case the jury were discharged without agreeing on Saturday night, will be put on his trial a second time.- The general impression m Wangmui ia that the case is a trumpery one vfor' the Supreme Court to have to deal with, and that it should hßve been 'settled m the lowpr CourG and not sent tor trial. In, discharging Jenkins, "His Honor said that he could not let him go without sajing that it was exceedingly undesirable that he'should-return^to-'the place where he came from, and. recommeaded the authorities to. comider the circumstances^—?Mr Hutchison.
