An Important Case.
At the Wangrnui R.M. Court, Wil* mot Powell, as Secretary of the WanWadganui Club, was charged on the information af David Lundon, Collector of Customs, that he did assist m the withdrawal of of beer from a cask containing the same, without destroying the scamp, affixed thereto m the manner provided by the Beer Duty Act 1880, whoreby the said Wilm&t Powell, was liable to a penalty of £50. Mr Lundon stated that the information was laid under the 19 th section of the Act, the manner ot defacing the stamp being provided for under the 15 th section, and requiring that the stamp be affixed on the taphole m such a way that the stamp Bhould be destroyed on the opening of the tap. Mr Powell admitted the offence, but stated that it was unintentional. Mr Lundon said that was so, and asked for- the* smallest penalty, which he believed was £1. He pointed out that the stamps, if not defaced, might be used again. " His worship imposed a fine of £1, and costs 7s.
