The auction sale by Messrs Harris m conjunction with Mr Gr. M. Snelson of Mr Beaven's stock commenced to day at noon, and was kept briskly going till the afternoon, xfc will be resumed tomorrow at 10 a.m. and every line is being offered without reserve some good bargains are being obtained to the delight of the fortunate purchasers. The Ready Money Store is offering a special lines of overcoats at prices which should ensure a rapid sale. The line is not extensive and will soon be closed, so that pnrchasera should buy early. Cheap aßthe prices are the goods will be found te be excellent quality, and it is not expected one will be left unsold after Satur» day night. Atttention is directed to the list of auction sales of freehold property advertised by Mr G. M. Snelson to be offered on various dates during the en suing week. The Masonic gathering yesterday was m all respects entirely successful/Over twenty brethren were initiated, and some eighty odd were preseut at the banquet, the catering for which was m Host Walkley's usual first-class style. Mr J. 0. Waikato will shortly be stocked with cheese factories, as nearly every township is getting one up. Palmeraton still res mains dormant. The Wairoa Guardian thinks it worth while to chronicle the alUimportant fact that the representative ot that jbur'bai, whet m Napier some few weeks ago had " a beet" with royality, as illustrated m the person of that rank old " Bwiper" King Tawhiao. The Brandy Act is being stringently enforced m Marlborough, a number of cases having been already dealt with, m all of which fines were inflicted. It appears that M. Gambetta's funeral was taken advantage of 3n a most original manner by M.. Duval, who was at the head of a large financial establishment m the Chnusee d'Antin., On Saturday movn- , ing this intelligent man sent off all his clerks to the funeral, and when the poor men came to business on Monday morning, great was their astonishment to find all the doors closed. The Commissaire de Police was sent for. M. Duval had bolted, and the strong box was empty. The following tenders were received by the Public Works Department for the 13,529 sleepers contract, Hurunui-Wai« taki Railway :— Accepted, Johnston, Wood and Co., Christchurch, £2705 j declined, W. Booth and Co., Carter ton, £2931 ; W. L. Bailey Bros,, Palraerston North, £3344. It is, after all* likely that Parliament will meet for the despatch of public business at a date nearer the Ist than the 14th June. The day has not yet been fixed, but the contractors for the additions to the, buildings will be hastened on to complete their work as soon as possible. At the Synod one night the Rev. Mr Jordan raised a hearty laugh, m which In joined most merrily, by a genuine" bull." He said he had 4in his church "many dissenters who were members of the Church of England," and when the laugh subsided added, "The Synod must remem« berl'm an Irishman, and privileged accordingly."
