Whilst the steamer Charles Edward was lying at Westpprt a charge of dynamite was fired m the river close to the. vessel, for the purpose of blowing up a snag. The steamer was. much shaken by the force of the explosion, bub it was not thought any damage had been sustained. On her passao-e to Nelsonshe made two feet of water m the main hold. It is supposed that some of her rivets must have been started. - - Inveboabgill, This Day. ~ Several eases ot stack burning under .suspicious circumstances have been reported to the police. # Dunedin, This Day. lne inquest on Ah Chin the murdered Chinaman at Roxburgh, was formally opened on Saturday night, and was ad. journed till to-day. Nothing more has been heard of the missing man Coulster, at Roxburgh. An. inquest was held on Saturday, on the body of a child two and a half years old, named Cecil George Dwight. His mother gave evidence that she was m town with the child and her baby. As they were passing along Princess-street a large mastiff dog bounded up against the child, who was clinging to her skirt, and knooked him down. The apparent owner of the dog picked him np. After saying he did not 6eem to be much hurt he went away. Blood was, however, gushing from one of his ears, and he could not stand up. He was brought to Dr Maunsell, who attended him until he died on Ihursnay last. The owner of the dog been advertised for, but he had not made himself known.
