CORRESPONDENCE.

IN A FALSE POSITION. (to the editor of the standard.) Sir, — 1 desire to make public a grievance and loss combined. Several of the settlers m the Manchester Block and bordering the Palmerston Borough, are, at present very unjustly rated owing to being m a false position. I refer to those whose properties are adjacent to the Gorge road, which properties are m reality a portion ol the Manowatu Highway District; but owing to a little trickery m the past, at present come within the boundary of the Manchester Block. Now, it is clear to all, that those people living on the road mentioned, require no further road improvements, as they have one of the best roads m the colony, to which the Manchester Block contributed nothing ; yet the properties are taxed to maintain and form roads m the Manchester Block, from which they will never, receive any benefit whatever, nor even are they interested m the slight' si way whatever. They are also called 1 upon to race themselves under the Road, and Bridges Construction Act, because the majority of the settlers are gulled into the belief that they will reap a benefit from such an action, while m reality they are taxing themselves to enhance the yalue of an H nglish Company's lands. Now, sir, this is also unjust to the Palmerston district, and a loss m consequence of the whole of the monies accruing from these . properties being last to this district, and going to. ward embellishing the Company's land, instead of helping to devt lope the district m which it is m reality raised. Hence the unjusice to the se< tiers, as they are forced to pay taxes which will not benefi- them one iota. You will see the hardship of being so taxed under the circumstances mentioned. Hoping the day will come when the settlers will be able to feel when paying the rates, that they are paying 1 what will be spent m the advancement of the district m which they reside, and either directly or indirectly receive a benefit therefrom.—lam, &c, Epitome. Stoney Creek, April 19th, 1883.
