For the first time m the matory of the colony the Marine ; Board of South Australia have appointed a woman to be a lighthousekeeper. Another keeper was wanted for the new lighthouse at Oape Banks, and with the approval of her parents, the daughter of the headkeeper there was duly enrolled as a member of the lighthouse staff at a salary of LSO a year. She is to take her regular watch, and m every respect perform the deities of a male keeper. Sir Philip Rose whose death; was lately chronicled, was a partner m the celebrated firm of Baxter, Rose, Norton, and 00., who were the solicitors of the Tich« borne claimant when he first turned up* Instructions have been given m the Treasury Department that the annual financial returns are not to be supplied to the Press for publication until after Major Atkinson's return to Wellington. Major Atkinson is expected to return to Wellington next Sunday. Mr Bryce will probably finish his visit to the King Country by the end of the month, and will then stay for a short time at Wanganui, and afterwards, perhaps, be engaged for a few days on the West Coast. A Wellington paper says :— The non* arrival of the Anchor Line steamer W a l, lace, from Nelson,, is .causing some uneasiness. She is telegraphed as having left Nelson at 5 p.m. on Monday, and taking the time to midnight; she was then 55 hours out, whereas she generally makes ' the passage- m i 5 hours. The strong southerly winds which' have pre vailed since heir departure would no doubt cause shelter,' but as all the small coasting ■ steamers resumed their running oa-Tues-day, the apprehensions that are felt are not without cause, . ._ , ; .-,->, Mr Lee, the Wellington Inspector of Schools, m the course of his annual re" port, says : — The number now on the books is 6602, showing an increase of 333 on last year's return. »
