Evelyn Ashley, Under* Secretary far the Colonies, m the cour>e of a speech which he made last evening at Northampton, stated that he expected that the annexation of New, Guinea would have to be undertaken by England m self-defence, to prevent its acquisition by another power. The trial of Timothy Kelly, for the murder of Lord Cavendish, and Mr Burke, commenced at Dublin to-day. Whitphead, the proprietor of the dynamite factory, who was seized at Bir-. mingham, and the dynamite conspirators, who were arrested m London, were again brought up, at Bowsbreet Police Court to-day. Norman, a former accomplice of the prisoners, who has turned informer, gave evidence to the effect that the Fenian fraternity m New York had . hatched a plot to destroy Public Buildings m London; that O'Donovan Rassa had been one of the abettors, and that Gallagher, one of the prisoners before the Court, had directed the announ-etnents ofthe gang. Sandford, Bishop of Tasmania, has been presented by his late congregation at Gibraltar with a silver vase and a cheque for £1200. The cargo of frozen meat by the ship Dunedin is selling at 6d per per Ib. The shipment by the Cuzco is inferior to previous cargoes, and has realised 3d per lb. The market is glutted. The City and Suburban Stakes was run at the Epsom Spring Meetingyesterday, and was won by Roysterer, Lowland Chief second, and Sweetbread third. Kingston, another of the Invincibles, has been arrested for complicity m the Phoenix Park and other murders. The story told by a telegraph clerk of his having been kidnapped by Fenians is distrusted, and the o.erk has been suspended. * The Arabs are reported to be fighting amongst themselves m the vicinity oi Aden, Troops have been despatched to restore order, and H.M.S. Dragon has been detained at Aden, The Prince or Bulgaria is on a visit to the Sultan, and is treated as an Imperial The Government has announce! m the House of Commons its intention to appoint a pernament Commitee of Agriculture, under the presidency of Right Hon. J. G. Dodson. Government House, Ottawa, has been threatened by the -Fenians.
