News From Afar.
[■Wanganai Pa par. J Mr Lundon, the worthy Collector of Customsi is not a man easily surprised, bat even his placid temperament was roused yesterday •By ■ a peculiar missive sent down to him from Palm* erston North . It purported to be ian official letter from the bailiff of the R.M. Court m that town, b aring the stamp of the Court.and enclosed m an envelope duly franked by Mr Ward,, the Magistrate. Inside^the missive was a bill against Mr Luhdbtf for 6s, for extra cleaning, at the Court, on the, occasion of the trial of Jessop and others for the illicit still affair. The Collector hardly knows' whai to do with this precious demand, which seems to introduce the novel idea that the obligation of cleaning out a Court is throwa on the prosecutor. The extra work wa3 no doubt the result ef the great crowd attracted by the still cases, and it would be just as reasonable to make a small charge for admission to cover extra expenses,, as to dun a Government official for the charwoman's bill. ■
