ILLICIT WHISKEY.
Mb Geobge, ex-Chairman of the Chamber of omtnerce, at the annual meeting of that body commented upon the " extraordinary action of the Government m causing to be sold by |mb. lie auction, at 6.s per gallon, the whiskey seized from the illicit still at Porirna." He pointed out that a quantity of bad whiskey was thus placed on the market by the Government on which the honest trader wouM be compelled to pay a duty of 14s, beside the cost of the spirit. In thin instance, he said, certainly "some one had blundered," and if such a course were continued, it would be necessary for the Chamber to take some action m the matter. The seizure of a large still m the Manawatu, he added, implied that the inducement to this class of cume was so great as to lead to the inevitable -conclusion that the duty on spirits was now raised beyond a safe limit.
