IMPORTAiS l 1 SEIZURE.

Considerable excitement was caused m Palmerston yesterday evening by the news that an illicit sti'l haJ been soizedi by the police, and that Joseph Jessopj not unknown m former undertakings of this kind, had been arrested m connection with the seizure. For come time past the police have bad suspicions ot a still being worked, end after consider-, able research its location was ultiraat^'y discovered. The place is some distance off the Napier road, m the direction of Bunnvthorpe. The Collector of Customs, Wanganui, end t\t police reached the spot on hunday, when after waiting over a «lav, Joseph Jessop was seen coming to the spot, and after pursuit was arrested. Richard Peck was afterwards arrested, on suspicion of corns plipity. The "plant" is said to be a very complete .one, capable of turning out ailarge quantity of spirits daily, the still itself- being set m brickwork, and the vat having a large capacity. A. mask was also found on the spot, for use when, recognition was sought to be avoided. The Collector of Customn considers .the seizure, the v largest ever made m the Colony. It is believed that a number of persona are implicated,- and the result ot the magisterial inquiry and further investigations by the police and detectives are looked forward to with very considerable interest. [Thefaccussd weie brought up at the R.M. Court this afternoon, when the police asked for a remand which was granted for eight days. Bail was allowed m prisoners own recognizances of £200 fcachj and two sureties of £100 each for each prisoner, or £800 m all. Messrs Peck^ brothers of the accused, became sureties m both cases.]
