(united press association. I Per s.s. V^akatipu. I : Sydney, March 7. A woman named Wagner, residing m Exeter-place, off Wexfordnstreet, narrowly escaped hem* shot dead by a man named John Cosgroye. The two it appears, had been living together as man arid wife for some time past, and a week or so back sailed together for Brisbane, but failing to find employment there, they almost immediately returned again to Sydney. Oosgrove, it appears had about £140 m the bank* which he drew out before leaving tor Brisbane, and on their return to Sydney, he separated from the woman, leaving the money m hsr possession. The woman subsequently took up with another man, and Cosgrove, enraged with jealousy, went to the house and shot; her m the mouth. Immediately after committing the deed he went to jffo. 2 police station, where he gave himself up, and the woman was taken- to the hospital by the police m a critical state, m which condition she still remains. A young man named James Molloy, a gasfitter, employed at the gas works attached to the railway premises at Redfern, was crossing the lines when he was knocked down by a number of 1 carriages which were being shunted at the time by a shunter na-ned Thomas Davis. Six of the carriages passed over the unfortunate man's body, killing him instantaneously, and almost cutting him m two. At the Central Police Court,' a man named Samuel Cowan M'Connell has been charged with stealing about 500oz of gold, the property of the Day Dawn Goldmining Company. He was. remanded to Queensland. Melbourne j March 7. Detectives Dowden and Potter have arrested a woman named Mary Ann , Lovell, for the robbery .of £1500 >woitb of money and jewellery from the person of J ames Lang, squatter, on Friday night. Lang met the wctman and wefit into a house with, her, where the offence was committed. A boy 16 years of age dived into the Yarra yesterday morning with his clothes on. He sank an^ was drowned. The body has cot yet been found. Brisbane. March 7. i The London missionary schooner Mayor has become a total wreck m the i Ply River, New Guinea. I Perth, March 7. A married woman named Pontirido has been murdered at Freshwater Bay. She was found outside her house m her night»dress, with her throat cut and her body otherwise mutilated. A coloured man named Jacobs has been committed for trial on suspicion of having committed the crime. (Per s.s. Waitarapa at the Bluff.) (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Melbourne, March 9. Mr R. S. alpole, Secretary to the Cacutta Exhibition, has interviewed Mr L. L. Smith, anl the latter promised to use his utmost efforts to secure a representation of Victorian wines at the Calcutta Exhibition. Claims for compensation on account of the Hawthorne accident are being heard by the Arbitration Board and Supreme Court. In all the cases yet decided small damages have been awarded. The Steam Navigation Board lately held an inquiry into, the stranding of the ship Berengaria, and the point was raised that the board was powerless to deal with the certificates,, as the ship sustained no damage. The question was submitted to the Attorney-General for his opinion, and he upheld the objection; so the proceedings have ceased. An elephant has been brought from Calcutta for th« Zoological Gardens, and has been safely landed. It will be trained to carry children m the gardens. Richard Hart, of Sandhurst, was being arrested by Constable Zollond for horss-steaUng, when he turned round and fired at the constable with a revolver. He just missed him, however, and was secured before the discharge of the other barrels. It is believed the prisoner is related to Steve Hart, of Kelly gang notoriety.
