Carus Wilson and the Bishop.
[Post.] As6ome misconception seems to have arisen regarding the case of the Rev. E. Oarus Wilson v. the Bishop of Wellington recently heard m the Wellington Resir dent Magistrate's Court,- owing to tbe accidental omission m all the newspaper reports of the case of any reference to a letter which practically embodied the gist of the defence, it is only fait that we should offer some explanation on the matter. It will be remembered that judgment was given against, the plaintiff on the ground that he had sued the wrong man. It was essential to maino tain the principle that the Bishop has no personal pecuniary responsibility . for clergy 'stipends, .so this point had tobe raised, and it proved fatal m itself. But tbe gist of the defence was that no balance of stipend was due. Mr Wilson ■resigned just before the end of the Dec. quarter, and his resignation was accepted by the Bishop by return of post, the acceptance being dated 2nd January. The stipend was paid m full up to the end of the quarter, aud the engagement terminated at that date. Consequently, ibis held by the Church 1 authorities that nothing more is owing to the claimant, and therefore bis demand is resisted.
