"/ When the beating was" finished by the Bey's becoming exhausfcecT/V the lieutenant arose took off his sword and handed it to his superior, and -said, " You have disgraced me m the presence of my own men; lam no more worthy/ to -lie. 'ani officer, put me iv the ranks . " For this — the only manly > act I ever witnessed among these people — the lieutenant was charged with insubordination and mutinous conduct, was tried byconrtwmartial, was sentenced to be shot, and J. saw the sentence nut into RXfc.ution."
