BOROUGH COUNCIL

TUESDAY'S MEETING. I Continuation of Report. WATER SUPPLY. The Mayor stated that an inter* view had taken place with Mr Garry, from Napier, who gave it as his opinion that at least th« outlay required would be £250 before they could expect to obtain water. With such a cost the ratepayers would have to be consulted, and agree to the requisite additional rate to meet the outlay. Under the circumstances the Public Works Cooi mittee could not recommend the work being authorized. Or Walker suggested the sinking of wells m one or two of the more populous places ot the town. JELe spoke at considerable length, and with much energy on the subject. Or McNeil said when he first mooted the subject he had no idea the experiment was to be so costly. Or Linton said the estimated cost was based on the assumption that a great depth Would have to be attained, while there was no reason to assume that water might not be obtained at a much less depth th».n expected. He referred to the offerr of a fire-engine, and the reasons which had actuated the Borough Council m refusing it on account of the stipulations attached.. He would be strongly m favour of testing the feeling ot the ratepayers m the matter, and so finally deciding the question.

The Mayor recommended waiting until more satisfactory- data were before them, or until the result of experiments now being tried could, bo ascertained. Cr Linton still warmly advocated making a start, and letting the rate* 1 payers see that they were m earnest. He thought it was a question for the ratepayers to decide, and would Bug* gest that a public meeting be convened to consider the question, It was decided to hold the meetiug next Monday evening at the Town Hall. LIGHTING OF THE TOWN. Or Mowlem drew attention to the unsatisfactory state m which the lamplighting contract was being discharged, m consequence, he believed, of the lamps being insufficiently filled when they are lit, thus going out early, besides giving a very insufficient light. The Mayor stated the result of a conversation he had had with Dr Lemon m reference to a proposal to light the town with electricity; provided the requisite power could be obtained which it was thought would be practicable. Dr Lemon considered the scheme feasible.

The following additions, m lieu of members who had left the Council were made to the membership of * various committees viz., Public Works Committee Cr Linton ; Public Hall Com* mittee, Cr Leary ; Public Reserves Committee, — Crs Learr and Mowlem. COLLEGE RESERVES. The Mayor stated that when m Wellington he had seen the Secretary, Mr Powles, and some members of the Wellington College Reserves Committee, and brought un^er their notice the matter of the Council's propoal m reference to those Reserves. It was promised that the matter should be 'brought up at the next meeting. , By the report m the Wellington papers he saw tnat it had been, and that Mr Bonny and the Secretary had been appointed to consider the matter, and from them a reply might be ex- ' pected m due course.
