(" Spectator " m Herald.) Prior to the Man^atu meeting a> certain mare trained m Wanganui wa» made a hot favorite for the Plying racei and a "dead set;'- was made against her by a well-known bookmaker, who, it is alleged,, laid her m donbles with other horses several times over. When asked bow it was that he could afford to do this, he stated that he had someWellington money \ : to lay off. Th© backers of the mare •m question com* plain that all was not square and above board. I have been askdd/ to call attention to the fact thut she was not scratched till within a very short , time of the race, and that the metalican over-' laid his book' considerably. If he was not ia collusion with the owner he took liberties which' he. was not justifieS m doing, as the mare could, I believe^avo settled everything engaged m the race. :
