Steamer Casualty.
__ ♦ ; ACCIDENT TO THE St., KILDA. (by telegraph), (united press association-). --.: . Greymouth, Jan. 24. An official inquiry was held at this Custom House, before Collector Woon, into the cause of the late accident to the steamer St. Kilda's boiler. The evidence of the captain, 1 chief engineer, second engineer, add Milne (engineer of the pig Despatch), was taken. '.The evidence went to show that the cojlgpse was caused by the want of. water m the boiler. Daring twenty years' experience the chief engineer never knew of such an accident. He had been only nine ; weeks' m .the steamer, but fonad out that; the boiler was subject to priming. Had every confidence m the second engineer, as he was a steady man though holding no certificate. — Alexander Milne said it /was possible for priming to go on for six or twelve hours, and deceive the officer m charge of engines. The guage-glass .sometimes carried false water. The whole evidence will be forwarded to. Wellington.
