At the Supreme Court to«day, the arson case against Geo. Eraser, con. tractor for Catlm's River railway, was takt»n. He was charged with burning down a store on the works which the Public Works Department had given him notice he must quit. After a lengthy heating, the jury -brought m a verdict of not guilty, adding that the Insurance Companies were greatly to blame for taking risks without inspecting the premises. The Presbyterian Synod spent six hours last night over the Deceased Wife's '"ister question, and tbey eventually decided to adopt the dicision of the presbytery, namely, to let the mattei stand exaotly as it is. Invbroargill, Jan. 20. The weather is warm and bright, and harvesting is beginning early this season. Reports from different parts of the district state chat cutting has commenced. There is a dearth of reapers and binders (machines), and sellers have practically cleared out. It; is said 50 more could have been sold here. Geeymodth Jan. 20. The propriety of allowing- one person committed to withdraw his bail bond, thereby being lodged m prison, so as to enable him to be brought up under a writ 'i habeas corpus, aud having the legality of the committal tried, is now under consideration of counsel. In the Supreme Cjurt to-day, James Kay, was sentenced to three years for burglary. The case of James Crowiey, charged with murdering his wife with a box-iron is proceeding m the Supreme Court, and will probably l*st all day. A waterman named Wm. Fitzsim« monds was found drowned m the harbor to-day. Eriiontly only m the water 24 hours. Patea/ Jna 20. A. disused fellmongery belonging to Felix McCarthy, publican, was burned down early this morning. Origin unknown. Insured for £300 m the Standard, and ths owner reckons his loss at £50. Dr/NEDijsr, Jan. 17. The New Zealand Pottery Company at Milton have resolved to wind up. There has been a loss of £3642 16s . Bd. The shareholders present at the meeting regretted much the absolute necessity ot winding up the business, and the hope was expressed that a new company might be started, especially as all the early difficulties have been snrmounted, and a number of skilled workmen have been brought to the country.
