A man jva-j brought before the Resident Magistrate to-day, who was separated from his wife, charged with assaulting her and destroying her property. Amongst other things he tied a fire-brand to her cow's tail and set the auimal loose round the paddock. He had to pay for the damage he did, and also to find heavy sureties to keep the peace. j The beer duty collected here during the past year was £13,836 against £13/260 last. Joseph Welchman, employed at Mr Seed's flax works, at Southbrook, got his right arm entangled m the scutching mill this morning, and the arm was torn completely off below the elbow. The unfortunate sufferer was conveyed to Rangiora, where he was attendeJ by Drs Williams and Downes. Auckland,' January 16. The representative team of cricketers who recently went South met to* Jay and presented W. F. Buckland, the manager, with a silver cake basket. The man Heath has been committed for trial for a criminal assault on a girl eight years old. Auckland, Jan. 17. The grand jury found true bills against R. 0. Bigstock and Owen Sims, forgery ; Mark Marks »nd Sampson Josephson, stealing from a shop ; A . E. Long, attempted parricide. No bills were found Annie Stackpoole, concealment of birth 5 Hokoai, horse stealing ; Ellen Cortis, stealing from person. Ashburton, Jan. 17. The weafch er is magnificent, for the harvest, which is now general throughout the Ashburton County. There will be a great scarcity of labor, as the crops are very heavy. At a Government sale of town sections here on Tuesday, all the allot* meets, at a distanca from the business part of the town and poorly situated, realised exceptionally high prices. Timaru, Jan. 13. The heat during this morning and afternoon has been most intense, the themometerat one time registering 150 degrees m the sun. Several cases of sunscroke are reported, one being fatal. The body of a man named John Dale was found m the Mataura River i.o-day. Deceased, who had been drinking for some time, w*« m receipt of remittances from Home. Tne body bore marks of violence, which the doctor thinks were iririct>'d boforp death.
