The Nelson drapers have resolved to cloae their establishments every Tuurs« day afternoon for a half-holiday. The College Governors announce that the Nelson Girls' College will be opened on the 2nd of February, under Miss Kate Edgar, M. A. principal 5 MiBS L. Edgar, M.A. ; and Miss 8. H. Milne, assistants, with Miss E. Bruce Bellady matron, and masters and mis* tresses for special subjects. The Volunteers are being sworn m under the new regulations, but many cf those who were formerly most enthuthiastic, appear to be holding back, fearing the stringency of the new regulations. Fisher and Co. have erected the first refrigerator m use m the col6ny ia connection with the trade: It is a BellColeman patent, capable of supplying 1000 cubic feet of cold air per hour, Ihey have also a canning plant for turning out 60001bs of pressed meat pei diem. 1 Napier, Jan. 11. j The Government, having received assurances that the subscribers to the hospital desired to continue their share of the maintenance and administration of the institution, telegraphed yesterday that under those circumstances the old pound-for-pouud system would be continued. The election for subscribers' representatives on the Hospital Committee accordingly proceeded on the old basis, resulting m the mayor and treasurer and another candidate being at the bottom of the poll. I\ew Plymouth, Jan. 11. The Premier arrived here from A.uck» hnd by the mail steamer. With Major Atkinson he will go to Hawera on Friday to consecrate the Hawera Masonic Temple. A trial of reapers and binders took place to-day, and out of three competitors the machine manufactured by Rnd and Gray took the first prize, the voting being — Reid and Gray, 46 ; Howard's Simplex, 14 ; Samuelson's, 12.
