APPOINTMENTS TO THE AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE.

The political and diplomatic circled m France, and the trading classes, are profoundly affected by Gambetta'B death, but the artizans and laboring classes appear careless, and the usual round of New Year's gaieties m Paris is going on unchecked. On the German and Austrian bourses his death is regarded as an additional guaramee for the peace of Europe. The Press o England and the Continent generally eulogises the patriotism of the deceased statesman, and deplores his loss as one of the pillars of the Republic. It is reported that it was a lady who originally inflicted the wounds m the head and side which were the primary cause of death. The Chief Secretary is persona ly visiting the districts m Ireland, with the view of devising efficient measures of relief. Mr Crawfurd has purchased Isonomy for nine thousand guineas. Professor Robertson has been appointed to the Lord Almoner's chair for Arabic at Cambridge University m succession to Professor Palmer, recently killed m Egypt. Viscount Enfield, Pajliamentary Undersecretary for ludia, has resigned. The Zulus are reported to be buying arms and amunition, apparently with a view to war. Edmond Young has issued a circular expressing; the opinion that increased expedition m the transport ot Australian wool to the English market requires that the dates of the sales should be changed. He invites colonial wool importers to form a committee to discuss the propriety of commencing next year's series op Btu Jauuary,' 11th March, 17th June, and 23rd September, which would secure the advantages of an even market throughout the year, and ensure the old clip being gold before the arrival of jthe new one. He also considers it would be advisable to alter the dates of the third and fourth Bcriee this year, so as to terminate the auction sales early m .November. The Victorian loun is announced as being m either debentures or inscribed stock, the London and Westministei Bank having undertaken the inscription. The minimum ia £100, and the tenders are to be opened on 9th Jan* vary. Mr Douglas Brown has been appointed Professor of Chemistry, and Mr George Walker, Second Wranglei of Cambridge, Professor of ..Mathematics at Auckland University College. London, Jan. 3. [t has transpired that the Egyptian government has proposed to the Powers that the present mixed international tribunals m Egypt should ouly be prolonged for another year instead of ar undefinate term. The Homeward mails via Sues and Brandisi, which left Melbourne on the 23rd November, were delivered yesterday.
